Wife Asks If AITA For Rehoming Husband’s Dog After He Suddenly Disappeared For 45 Days

September 20, 2024

You’re absolutely right — when someone takes on a responsibility, they should be fully committed to it. It’s unfair to abandon that responsibility and expect someone else to pick up the slack, especially without any kind of mutual agreement. If both parties are on the same page, that’s one thing, but just leaving without warning is completely irresponsible.

In today’s story, the wife posted on the AITA subreddit to get judgment on a situation where her husband disappeared without notice, leaving her with a dog that he had specifically said was his responsibility. The couple had agreed to get the dog together, but it was pre-established that the husband would take full responsibility for it. Then, out of nowhere, he vanished for 45 days with no explanation.

Worried that something terrible had happened to him, the wife was left to care for the dog, even though it wasn’t her responsibility. Realizing she couldn’t care for it long-term, she found a deserving new home for the dog. It turns out, her husband had been off enjoying a spontaneous trip, leaving her in the dark. To find out where he went and the fallout from this decision, you’ll have to dive into the full story.

This tale really highlights the importance of following through on commitments and not just running away from them.

1. Yeah if there was a very bad reason behind it. And no, if there was a very valid reason behind it.

2. So it’s a, cute, family of 4 with a husband, a wife, a one year old cute son and an adorable doggo whose the husband’s responsibility but the couple paid for it equally.

3. Oh wow, that was a concerning turn. The husband disappeared for 45 days straight without any notification, message, etc.

4. What does he really mean when he says his cellphone got stolen? He was away for 1 and a half month, is a journalist, so could’ve easily bought a new phone or could have borrowed it at least to notify his wife about his whereabouts and wellbeing. Not nice, husband.

5. Wow, he didn’t even work for the entirety of 45 days. The husband only worked for 3 days and chilled in Italy for the remaining 42. And the wife thought he was dead or something.

6. THe dog was husband’s responsibility, he wasn’t there to take care of it so I think she did the right thing by giving away the dog.

7. And OP didn’t have a liking for dogs in general. Very fair.

8. Should’ve told her where he was then.

It’s definitely frustrating to see such inconsiderate behavior, especially when someone just up and leaves without a word. The wife’s concern shows how much she cared, and meanwhile, the ex-husband was living it up in Italy, completely disregarding how his actions affected others. I totally understand why OP decided to get a divorce.

When it comes to the dog, the situation makes perfect sense. If someone disappears for that long without any explanation, it’s natural to assume the worst. The dog was his responsibility, and if OP didn’t step in, the dog could have suffered due to neglect. Rehoming the dog was the right call to ensure its well-being.

I agree — OP is definitely not the asshole here. The real blame lies with the ex-husband, who’s only upset now that he has to deal with the consequences of his actions.

Here are a few responses from the internet:

9. Honestly, the dog would’ve suffered and she had to be taken care of.

10. An animal advocate said OP rehoming the dog was the right decision.

11. Exactly, he abandoned them all for a bicycle ride in Italy.

12. As a husband, he was still supposed to inform his damn wife where he was going. It wasn’t an emergency trip, it was a vacation in Italy.

13. There was another side that said OP should’ve inquired more about the husband’s whereabouts before giving the dog away. Maybe she could’ve found some clues after filling a missing person report with the police.
